Sooner or later you may find the beast isnt working any more. Plenty of these are used in IBM laptops. Mine is installed in Compaq LTE 5280 oldie.

Pictures on the left shows the guts - a PCB with Toshiba MCU that is connected to the pointing sensor by flat cable.

In operational state the sensor shows the resistance of approx 15 kOhm. There shouldnt be no any stray wires in the cables. In my case the problem appeared at the cable to sensor connection point. I didnt find it feasible to glue back, so tried to solder wires directly to the sensor. First, detach the cable carefully. Remove the remnants of the glue from the sensor contact plates with some solvent - I used alcohol for this purpose. Use thin multicore wires to connect . I got nice wire out of junk 5-inch FDD - they are connecting the heads to electronics. Then you will need the new piece of flat cable. I got mine from another dead floppy - cut it alongside to get proper width. Solder thin multicore wires to this flat cable, put some insulation tape or glue to protect it.
